Diaspora May Hold Key to Victory in Tight Turkish Elections

In a close race between President Erdogan’s alliance and the united opposition, the large diaspora vote may decide who wins May 14 general and presidential elections.

Turkey is fast approaching critical general and presidential elections on May 14, and election polls suggest the race is tight in both the presidential and legislative elections between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s People’s Alliance and the opposition Nation Alliance.

The Supreme Election Council, YSK, has declared that nearly 60.7 million citizens resident in Turkey, are eligible to vote.

The YSK also said that more than 3.4 million Turkish citizens are eligible cast their votes abroad.

By April 27, 3.4 million Turkish citizens had already cast their votes in polling stations in their respective countries but also in Turkish border gates as well as airports. Voting in the diaspora will continue until May 9.
